Recent Developments

Sorry folks, looks like I've been slacking a bit in the blog department. Again.

I'd like to say it's all this wedding planning, project completing, vacation taking, degree achieving, and time with the boy and our babies that is keeping me away from here, but sadly, no. Instead, it's a small case of burnout.

We've had plenty going on that has kept us busy in the last few weeks, but very little has been around the house despite my constant nagging to start the kitchen. Instead, we snuck off for a little mountain trip with just the two of us where Brandon even caught a fish, we spent a day at the river, we got addicted to watching the seasons of "Son's of Anarchy", and I've been helping out my parents by working for them while their receptionist was on vacation in between my work at the restaurant.

And, oh yeah, it sounds like we have a new roomie!

Our last roommate, Garrett, was pretty cool. A quiet, friendly, hard-working, engineering student was just what we needed-- someone who was as boring as us. However, two years later, Garrett was finishing his degree and moving on to bigger and better things. He moved out in early May to start his master's in San Diego. We were sad to see him go, but that's just how it goes.

The last few months felt a little tight without a roomie. But soon we got used to being just the two of us. No more worrying about walking around in my underwear or a towel after a shower. No waiting to take a shower while someone else was in the bathroom downstairs. Hell, we even took over his shelf in the fridge... which reminds me I need to clear that off this week....

The point is, we do just fine making ends meet without a roomie, but things are way easier with one. It frees us up to do more of the things we love-- case-in-point: Projects. Plus, we have not just one, but two spare rooms, so we really don't have a reason to not have one. With Garrett, the search was simple. Our lender, and long-time family friend, set us up with her best friend's son. When we first met I realized I had a class with Garrett, and that he had sat right behind me for a whole semester (yay for small towns!).

Our search this time was not going so well. We didn't even know where to begin. I asked friends, had some show a little interest, but we were also being really picky. We still cringe thinking about when we lived with Brandon's brother and sister in law, and the crap we put up with, and we doubted we'd find another person as easy-going as Garrett, so we just kinda dragged our feet. Brandon joked that we still have a ton of "Good-Roommate-Karma" coming our way from what we put up with years ago, but we were still being very cautious. Additionally, we plan to add a Saint Bernard to the family come this fall, so the new roomie would have to be down with a 180 pound fuzzy drool-bucket. Secretly, well, okay, maybe not secretly, we hoped Brandon's little sister, Emily, would want to move in. She graduates in September and would be the perfect fit. However, she got a job close to home, so we kept looking.

Ok, enough blubbering, the point is, we found someone. Our new roomie should be moving in next weekend! Her name is Erika, and she is going to school up here to be a hairdresser. My hairdresser/family friend asked if we still had a room and explained that her son's girlfriend needed a place by the end of the month, so we decided to meet up and go over stuff.

I had my reservations about having a girl roomie. After all, the biggest issues when we lived with Brandon's brother were between his wife and I. Brandon worried about drama too, but he also agreed that the issues we faced had less to do with us and more to do with their own issues at the time. Plus, Brandon thinks I could really use a friend up here since all my best friends are a few hours away. Erika and I hit it off right away. Surprisingly, she can talk almost as much as me (always a bonus in my book!) and she said she doesn't really cook, which was a relief to me because I do love to cook and bake, so I have some minor territorial issues in the kitchen-- just kidding of course. Well, sort of. And, as an added bonus, she promised she's boring, just like us. And, most importantly, she is a Dexter fan, just like us.

We are really looking forward to seeing how it goes this time around. Erika might be staying short term since she graduates in October, but if she is happy here she said she might stay longer too. If not, October sounds like the perfect time to try to drag over Brandon's little sister haha. We'll just keep on trying 'til we win.
