This last week got a little crazy around here...
For starters, it was already scheduled as a busy week for me with a haircut back home Tuesday, cake tasting, four days of subbing combined with an altered schedule of serving at the restaurant, and then, on top of that, we through in wedding set-up and rehearsal for Saturday followed by the whole wedding on Sunday... Whew. Busy!
But then, Brandon thought, "Hey, I can make it EVEN more crazy!".
Case in point: Vomit.
Yeah, on Tuesday I was headed back from meeting with a cake baker and I get the text, "I think the roach coach gave me food poisoning". First, I was sitting there like, "Uh, duh?!", but when I got home Brandon was SOOOOO sick. I'm talking buckets and "Don't touch that pile of clothes" comments. Ew. As the night continued he started to scare me. We were pretty sure we had an emergency room visit in our future if he couldn't start keeping stuff down.
The next morning, I decided to play it safe and call in for subbing to take care of my boy. Little did I know that this "sweet favor" was going to be something I'd regret. He started feeling better around 6pm after throwing up for 28 hours straight. I had gone to Macy's and picked up his clothes for the wedding, stocked up on toilet paper, Gatorade, and Pepto Bismol, and tried to get stuff ready to continue on with our pre-wedding duties.
Don't worry, I'm getting to the good part.
So, 2:00am rolls around and I feel a little weird. I am pretty sure I was in denial still because I convinced myself I was just hungry or had to go to the bathroom, or something... but I asked for a bucket just in case... the second I got it in my hands I started throwing up violently. Apparently, the taco truck wasn't the problem... someone brought home to flu to share with his fiance!
Missed work... The smell of vomit in our home.... A bride getting the call that her groomsman and her photographer are puking their guts up... Yeah, it was an awesome week.
By Friday morning, I tried to suck it up and go substitute teach a sixth grade class. By 11:00am I was exhausted, feeling sick again, and my stomach and body ached--especially after having to break up a fight in class! (Thanks kids! You're awesome!) I couldn't stay any longer. The last thing I wanted was to walk down the hallways and hear "Yeah! That's her! That's the teacher that puked in class!" No. Thank. You.
Thankfully, by Saturday we both felt healthy enough to drive down to help set up. Still weak, and both about ten pounds lighter, we had recovered just in time!

So, without anymore discussion of how our insides made it out of our bodies... here's the lovely wedding!
Josh and Erica became engaged back in December on their five year wedding anniversary. I had the pleasure of shooting their engagement session and hosting Erica's bridal shower as well. With Josh graduating from the police academy and Erica graduating college, they decided the time was right to say "I Do".
They planned a simple, backyard style, wedding with a picnic theme. Memorial Day weekend sounded like a great plan and we prayed to avoid the heat, but we sure as hell were not ready for rain. That's right. Right after setting up, and right as Erica arrived to get ready it started POURING. No bueno.
By then, I am certain I would have been freaking out. I mean, it was POURING, and windy.... but there she was, pretty calm saying, "It says it should be clear by noon". So, on we went rearranging tables, and continuing on. Somehow, besides being the photographer, I became the florist (Erica and I put together all the flowers including her bouquet), the day-of-planner, and the one people kept calling and asking questions for everything... it got very busy!
The rain finally cleared and by 12:30 we were set to take them up the hill for a private "First Look". Josh had already seen Erica that morning in the midst of the chaos with the rain-- but at least she wasn't dressed. So, we blindfolded him and stuck them both in the car and headed five minutes down the road to a pretty spot.

Josh's face looked so pleased when he first saw her. He kissed her, they hugged, and then he looked at me and said, "Now what?"--- ugh! What a boy!
The rain had provided us with some magnificent clouds and we were so thankful.

And I have to say, brides don't get much prettier than this.

Everyone from Exeter knows that the obligatory orange grove photo is a must. Even Jason, Brandon's brother laughed saying, "I've always wanted to take pictures by the orange trees!" (it's something we always laugh when we see tourists stopping to do).

The ceremony was simple and sweet. I might have gotten a little misty-eyed even behind the camera.

And the food.... mmmm... homemade barbeque tri-tip, chicken, pasta salad, potato salad, beans, green salad, and rolls. Yum!

And what's a wedding without a good ol' fashion cake smashing? Josh went to get a plate to serve the cake while Erica discreetly grabbed a cupcake for his return. Yeah, she nailed him, but he sure got her back!

All in all, despite the rain, despite the flu, the day turned out absolutely perfect. We are so happy for the new couple!

And, I have to admit, as a first time wedding photographer (on a rainy day) I think it turned out pretty darn good! The only thing I missed was a photo of the garter... but, hey, it's a learning process right?!

You did a GREAT job as a first time photographer. What a feeling to be asked to shoot someone's biggest day ever! The sunflowers are such sweet happy things. I have never seen seen just one carried as a bouquet--I like it! --and the shot of the girls "covering" their faces. Cute. Sorry about the sickness. What a pre-wedding story to tell. ugh!
