Buried Treasure.

So, I had something pretty damn awesome happen on Sunday. So awesome in fact, that I'm actually pretty shocked I haven't blogged about it yet...

I found buried treasure in our back yard.
Yeah, I'm serious.

I was out back pulling weeds while Brandon was edging the lawn. Although I really love gardening, I was pissed off at the papyrus plants that keep sprouting despite endless amounts of pulling and round-up for the last two years. So, at that point, I was just grabbing handfuls of sprouts and soil when I looked down and thought, "Hey, that looks like a ring." I reached for it figuring it would end up being just a metal scrap or washer or something, but then I was floored to see it was in fact a ring--especially in decent shape. I jumped up, squealed, and ran inside to try scrubbing it. I probably said "Holy crap" twenty times (sorry if this offends anyone, my filter disappears pretty often with excitement). I grabbed my jewelry cleaner and it cleaned up nearly instantly. The excitement continued to build as I explained to Brandon that a CZ would have been cloudy after spending at least two years in the soil.

So, the next step was to get it checked out.

We ran it down to a jeweler and turns out it is a real stone and inside the ring it is stamped 14k and .32, so I can only assume it is a 1/3 of a karat (at first I thought it was .50-- darn!). Although I think it is gorgeous, the setting is much taller than what I would wear, and besides, I already have an engagement ring I adore... but in the meantime this little beauty makes quite the conversation piece for my right hand.

My guess was that a woman was out back gardening and the ring slipped off in the soil and was lost, but that hasn't stopped other people from coming up with scenarios...

For example:

1.) A pissed off fiance threw it out the window and into the yard
2.) The angry husband beat his wife and then hid her ring
3.) If I keep digging I'll find the hand
4.) There's jewelry hidden all over our yard in effort to hide it from the cops

Yeah, I think these are all pretty unlikely if you ask me... but my cousin made a damn good point... he said, "Well, it must have been there for a REALLY long time considering the last owners were only gardening inside." Haha! Cracked me up...

P.S. If that joke just went a little over your head, click here to see the history of our home and you will understand what he was talking about :-)

So, for now the fate of the ring will fall on the appraisal from our jeweler. We found it two days after our two year anniversary of owning our home, so we like to think it was like a gift from our home to us, but we aren't sure if that means we should keep it or if we should try to get some money out of it and dive head first into another project. I guess time will tell.

So, in the end, ladies and gentlemen, what did we learn today?

ALWAYS REMOVE YOUR RINGS BEFORE GARDENING...

Now, is it me, or do you feel in the mood for a little gardening?!

  1. What an awesome story and an awesome find! I love that the previous owners were only "gardening inside," your brother is quite the funny creature!

  2. Whoa, that's way cool! I wonder how much it's worth? Guess you'll find out soon! And why haven't I found anything like jewelry? Instead all I find are buried cement patios and hidden showers in bad condition - not nearly as exciting... :)
