Labby-Doris

Although the wound is still so fresh from losing our wonderful lab, Indy, our family couldn't bear the hurt of coming home to an empty house any longer. It has barely been over two weeks since we lost Indy, and the emotions come and go as they please...

It is bittersweet having a new puppy in the home. Partly, we are so excited and my parents seem to be falling in love, but part of us is still mourning. We miss our girl, but we have to face the reality that we can only keep her in our hearts now.

Last night my mom was texting me pictures of the new puppy and it made it feel so real. It hurt realizing Indy is gone and that we have to open our hearts to this new little girl. She lays were Indy laid, she sits just like she did, she seems almost just as rotten as Indy, and she is smart as can be. I smile when I realize she's a lot like Indy. We know we will never have our special girl again. Indy was truly unique. But, I feel like she passed a little of her spunk into our new pup, and I hope that helps us heal.

So, without further adieu, here she is:

"Doris", as in "Labby-Doris"

She has had a couple different names. The wonderful family we got her from called her Orange-Puppy before changing her name to Bristol (another race, but not as good as the Indy 500) after we picked her out the Friday after losing Indy. But, when my parents brought her home, we struggled with agreeing on names.

(she is in the orange)

I liked "Zeppelin", "Zeppy" for short-- so did just about everyone else... My Dad liked "Cessna", "Shybul", and believe it or not, he wanted to name her "Galinda with a 'guh'" after "Wicked!" the musical! He joked we could call her "Gaga" haha! My mom liked "Bristol", "Daytona", and HATED "Zeppelin".

Indy was named after the Indianapolis 500 and so we liked the idea of race names, but because we were not choosing a name quickly, it was apparent we were almost in the situation of having a dog named, "Puppy"... We always called Indy our favorite Labby-Dor. We called her "Labby" a lot, and I can't help but smile (and get a little teary) saying it. We also always said "Indy-dog" and it was heart breaking having my two year old nephew, Conner, ask "Where is Indy-dog?" each time he came over. Without knowing how to explain death to a two year old, my mom had the burden of telling him, "Indy is all gone".

Originally, I thought we would save "Labby" as something special with our Indy, but I came home to see that this puppy was not going to let that happen. My mom and dad called her "Labby" too. She reminds us so much of our special girl.

My mom decided we needed something to distinguish. So she went with "Doris", "Labby-Doris". We will call her "Dori", "D-dog" and probably some of the other nicknames that they pick up along the way, such Indy's most common nicknames, "No!", "Bad Dog!", "Psycho dog!", and "Filthy Mess!".

She's already chewing on everything and getting into SO much trouble! She is a wonderful distraction from the hurt.

My mom sent this to me in a text saying, "Here we go again!"... she is pretty rotten it seems! Even with lots of supervision (my mom even takes her to work with her) she is still getting into trouble. My mom said she wanted to name her "Ninja" because she is so stealth when she is naughty... she just quietly sneaks over and does her thing!

Don't you just love the knocked over lamp?!

  1. I love it! I wish I could get another puppy. My Foster is 7 this year he is lab mixed with great dane. Those shots bring back some fond memories of naked puppy belly and the strong smell of puppy breath. It also brings back some more difficult memories of needle teeth and Foster's stealth pee-walk. Enjoy the time they grow so quickly.

  2. Thanks Caitlin for posting this. I hope this puppy can heal the hurt Indy's passing has brought to all of you. I love her look in the photo you write about how bad she is! She looks like she will also be a great friend and companion. Oma
