"Movin' to the country gonna eat a lot of peaches
I'm movin' to the country I'm gonna eat me a lot of peaches...."
The Presidents Of The USA - Peaches Video
When we bought our home we had a fruit tree in our back yard, but we weren't exactly sure what type.
Last year, it did not produce any fruit, but when spring rolled around it was filled with beautiful pink peach blossoms (you might remember from this post). Thank goodness that unlike last year, this year, those blossoms turned into these buds:
And those buds turned into these lovely peaches:
So, imagine my delight when these finally ripened and I ate our first homegrown peach. Not only were we excited to have our own peaches, but when we took our first samples off the tree I was so excited to bite into its juicy flesh to find that they were WHITE inside!
Our fruit-savvy friend said they are "September Reds" and something about them being "White Ladies", but all we knew is that they were delicious. Like, dead serious, these are the best peaches I have ever eaten. Perfectly ripe, and so juicy that they were nearly impossible to eat unless you were near the sink.
Plus, as an added bonus, they smelled so lovely in our kitchen each day as I picked a few here and there.
I have to stop to say congratulations to whoever picked all the peaches that hung over the fence onto the sidewalk-- you sneaky bugger, you... I bet you loved them... and to be honest, I would have stolen those as well, so congratulations for sharing our bounty with us.
It wasn't long before they started to drop off the tree I stripped it down and peeled and cut all the fruit for freezing for later use. I am so happy with our tree and how much quality fruit was produced with a little care and a lot of water.
It's the simple things in life that make us happy.
Yum Yum! How lucky to have that already in your backyard. Sounds delicious!
ReplyDeleteLove your blog, I linked to it somehow and then ended up reading almost the whole thing in one sitting.
Congrats on the engagement!
I'm a little envious! This reminds me of picking peaches over the summers when I was young. We always picked more than we could eat, freeze the remainder and make cobblers over the winter. Mmm... cobbler.
ReplyDeleteHi Caitlin,
ReplyDeleteAbout your dear peach tree, it's very exciting to have peaches at your disposable, but I want to give you a few tips towards the not so great things about them! And who knows, it might not be a deal breaker for you! The house we just moved out of has a peach tree in the backyard. Hopefully you and your fiance (I'm sure you love hearing that) will have the time and want to, to not have the problems we did. We didn't have the time or the energy at the end of the day to pick them daily like they need to be once they are ready. If you don't, they fall and rot on the ground. You will have flies outside and fruit gnats inside! The dogs will try to eat them, trust me! It makes the yard smell great if you run over them with a lawn mower but that was the best it did for us! Just wanted to let you know!!
Best of luck with your peaches!!
I adore your blog. I found you guys through Young House Love when they did a post about your screen project. ..And ever since I have been hooked! Your transformations have inspired me so :)

Thanks so much for all the sweet comments. In response to the worries about the peach tree, unless this next year produces record amounts of fruit, I think we are pretty happy with our tree.
ReplyDeleteWe have friends and family literally arguing over who should get our peaches, so I found myself picking them constantly. As they began to drop we stripped the whole tree down (because, yes, dropped peaches are a big mess!) and I peeled, cut, and froze them for cobblers later in the year. Can't wait!
